Steven Tyler’s First Grammys Experience Cost a Whopping ‘$800,000’

Aerosmith has 14-nominations and four Grammy wins under their belt, but the first time the legendary rockstars attended music’s biggest night, it cost them a pretty penny.

Steven Tyler stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Friday, January 26, to promote his inaugural Grammy viewing party which benefits charity Janie’s Fund and recalled back in the ‘90s they didn’t know you had to pay your way to the Grammy stage.

“We were really pissed off because it cost us $800,000 to fly the whole band and crew in to play at the Grammys and we didn’t get backed,” Steven recalled of Aerosmith’s stage debut at the 33rd Grammy Awards in 1991, where they performed "Come Together." “It was ‘You’re on. You’re getting a Grammy and you’re playing’ and it was holy-you-know-what we’re doing this and we get there and we find out — double-edged sword — the Grammys don’t pay for anything.”

Flash-forward 27 years and Steven is now paying it forward. The “Dream On” singer is hosting a Grammy viewing party on Sunday, January 28, with proceeds going to Janie’s Fund to help abused and neglected girls.

“I went to a place to find out what codependency was about … this was ’92, ’93, totally sober and … while I was in there the girls that were there … 8 out of 10 of them had been abused mentally, physically or emotionally and I would dare to say five out of 10 had been something sexually and … it’s interesting how quiet that’s been kept and suddenly it’s come out,” Steven reflected of the creation of Janie’s Fund.
