Fall Out Boy Celebrate ‘MANIA’ With Joked-Filled Album Release Party

“The dog ate the album.” That’s exactly how Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz perfectly explained M A N I A’s delayed release date during their epic iHeartRadio Album Release Party at the iHeartRadio theater in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 25.

Hosted by ALT 98.7’s Harms, the band returned to the stage after pushing their 7th studio album’s release date following mixed reviews of their lead single “Young and Menace.”

Wentz — after kicking off the intimate bash with a performance of 2005 throwback jam “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Centuries” — added that pushing back the release date of M A N I A was “terrifying,” but that it felt right. “It has to be about new music that we really love,” he added for the group.

M A N I A follows FOB's 2015 American Beauty/American Psycho and features the most electronic pop sound we’ve heard from the rock foursome, and, not to mention, a plethora of pop culture references, which lead singer Patrick Stump blames Wentz for.

“That’s just how Pete talks,” Patrick told Harms of where the album’s Tonya Harding, Tom Hanks and Britney Spears references came from. “If you ask Pete how his day was, you’re going to get a quote ... that’s just how he is. It’s so funny because it’s so earnest.”

After performing a powerful rendition of new track “The Last Of The Real Ones,” the boys hilariously went off on a tangent about Wentz’s “deep” obsession with 2009 film Terminator Salvation

Bringing it back to the music, they next performed “HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T” and took a moment to reminisce on their successful 15-year journey, shouting out their future hometown performance at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

“It’s crazy,” Pete told Harms. “We’re definitely going to celebrate [15 years] at Wrigley Field and then privately,” he joked, “I dunno what we will do. [Maybe] a little risotto — it’s not easy to prepare.”

“It’s a crazy big deal,” he continued of their Wrigley performance, “growing up, I always thought I’d be Ryne Sandberg and then I wasn’t so this is the closest I’ll ever be so I’m going to run the bases naked as soon as I get there.”

The foursome concluded the gathering by performing “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark,” powerful, drum heavy new track “Wilson (Expensive Mistakes),” “Dance, Dance” “Uma Thurman,” “This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race” and, of course, “Thnks fr th Mmrs” — but not before thanking their longtime fans for sticking by them.

“It’s been 15 years and we really appreciate those who’ve stuck with us for 15 [years] or 10 or 5 months or those still considering if they’ll stick around,” Wentz joked. “People are always like, 'When you walk away from M A N I A, what do you want people to walk away thinking about?' And I think sometimes when you look in your screens, you look out into the internet, you’re like ‘Wow it’s this vast place of loneliness where I just don’t get enough likes and I don’t feel like I’m adequate enough with myself even and everyone looks like they’re having more fun' ... and I would just say that hopefully this album lets you know that if you put the screen down and look out into the world, the world at large is not like that. The world is full of really, really weird people who do really weird and awesome things just like you and that’s really important to realize.”
