Potential Frank Ocean and John Mayer Collaboration for SNL Premiere

Tweets from both musicians hint at a possible on-stage collaboration for the weekly sketch comedy show

Sep 12, 2012

Following his performance at the MTV Video Music Awards last week, Frank Ocean will be the musical guest for the season premiere of Saturday Night Live this weekend. It’s another big stage for the performer, and another chance to win over those who’ve yet to discover the greatness of his major label debut, channel ORANGE—if in fact any of those people still exist.

Despite not always being the most revealing Twitter personality, Frank shared a bit of information about his set with this tweet on Tuesday morning:

Excitement about their potential onstage collaboration—or at least the travel buddy relationship these two might have—aside, “the bro” is just too good of a way to describe the loquacious womanizer, maybe-Katy-Perry-dating singer-songwriter. Mayer thickens the plot with this photo and caption (“Frank – SNL rehearsal”), posted to his Instagram account late Tuesday night. (See photo here.)

Unless Mayer is Ocean’s newfound style guru (say no to any hats he pushes your way, PLEASE) all signs point to his sharing the stage for at least one track on Saturday. Mayer hasan official featured credit on the album, playing the guitar on “White” (a 1:16 interlude), and is rumored to be behind the epic surges on “Pyramids,” so there are two options that could fill the typical two-song set list. Or he could always do Earl Sweatshirt’s verse on “Super Rich Kids.” As SPIN points out, both Ocean and Mayer have gained popularity for their “storytelling-based songwriting sensibility,” a trait Mayer shares with other greats, and has helped him to cross genres with previous live collaborations.
