“Despacito,” the record-breaking summer anthem, has held the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the 14th consecutive week. The Puerto Rican star originally teamed up with Daddy Yankee to release their own version of the record earlier this year, before collaborating with Justin Bieber for a remix. Before his performance on the morning show, which saw hundreds of fans fill Times Square, Fonsi spoke to Michael Strahan about the most streamed record of all time.

On “Despacito” becoming a global smash-hit, Fonsi said, “When we first started getting to the top 10, in the top 100, I was like, man, I’m going to break the top 10! It finally got to number one and it’s been there for 14 weeks. It’s been a huge blessing and a huge surprise. This is a song that came to me on my guitar, the same way I’ve been writing songs for the last 20 years, and I’m so honored that the world has connected to this Spanish song.”

Fonsi went on to talk about his surprise over Bieber wanting to collaborate with him. “I got a call at 2 o’clock in the morning saying that Justin Bieber heard the song, and that he wanted to do a remix,” he said. Fonsi continued, “It had to be real. It was exciting. He did a great job, he sang the first part in English, but he kept the chorus in Spanish. He wanted to keep the originality of the original song. I thought it was great for him to take the time for him to record in Spanish.”

As Gossip Cop reported, Fonsi supported Bieber for refusing to perform “Despacito”during his solo concerts. On the track, Bieber sings in Spanish, but the superstar has been understandably hesitant to replicate his performance live, prompting fan backlash. Fonsi said on ABC News radio in June, “I don’t blame him not knowing [the lyrics], and I think we have to give him a little bit of a pass because that’s not his main language.” Watch the full performance below!
