A true triple threat, the name TARYN MANNING may already be well known from her critically acclaimed role as ‘Nola’ in Paramount’s Hustle & Flow. But the multi-talented actress is hardly stopping at a successful acting career. These days if Manning isn’t working on set, she’s writing tracks for her band Boomkat, in the studio working on tracks for her first solo album or setting trends with her fashion line Born Uniqorn.
Manning is known for exploring a range of diverse roles in television, independent films and major studio productions. Always one to have multiple projects in the works, while juggling her acting career, Manning is a true force with her sultry vocals as the front woman of Boomkat and the saucy electronic beats on her solo tracks. In addition, Manning recently released her edgy Fall line for Born Uniqorn.
Besides her role in Hustle & Flow, Manning also starred opposite Freddie Prinze, Jr. in Jack and Jill vs. the World and also appears in Kill Theory with Agnes Bruckner. Manning recently completed filming Shem Bitterman’s The Job and Taylor Hackford’s Love Ranch with Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci.
In 2008, Manning completed work on the independent features Your Name Here, written and directed by Matt Wilder opposite Bill Pullman, The Speed of Thought opposite Nick Stahl, and Waking Madison, opposite Sara Roemer and Elisabeth Shue. Previously, Manning also starred in the film Weirdsville opposite Wes Bentley and Scott Speedman. Other feature film credits include: 8 Mile, A Lot Like Love, Crossroads, Crazy/Beautiful, Cold Mountain, Dandelion, The Breed, Kill Theory, When Nines Roll, and White Oleander.
Manning has recently been involved in a few promising projects such as her guest spot on the third episode of The CW’s Melrose Place, as herself, the front-woman of Boomkat who was having their music video directed by aspiring filmmaker Jonah (Michael Rady). In the same episode Manning’s first solo track “So Talented” made its TV debut in addition to Boomkat’s single “Run Boy.”
In 2008 she had a four episode arc on FX’s critically acclaimed series Sons of Anarchy. Manning also signed on for a recurring stint on the CBS TV show Viva Laughlin and Fox’s Drive. Manning first drew attention when she played ‘Rebecca Peabody’ on Fox’s critically acclaimed Get Real. Since then, she has also appeared in on CBS’s CSI: Miami, ABC’s The Practice, Fox’s Boston Public, the WB’s Popular, NYPD Blue and appearances in two pilots, Ryan Caulfield and 68.
The passion, charisma, and love that she has for fashion inspired her to start Born Uniqorn with her best friend Tara Jane in 2005. The clothing line represents Taryn’s eclectic, colorful, and energetic personality, along with her pop/rockstar image. Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Tori Spelling are just a few of the celebrities that have been wearing the brand. Their lines are inspired by old paintings from the 60’s and 70’s. The designs are very cutting edge, hip, and colorful. The line is available at select retail outlets such as: Spoiled Brat, Planet Blue, RevolveClothing.com, Singer22.com, Electric Tangerine, and Native.
Boomkat is the urban-pop due of Taryn Manning and her brother Kellin. They are currently gearing up for the release of their fourth single, “Lonely Child” off their self-released sophomore album, A Million Trillion Stars. Boomkat’s sound resonates with a diverse multitude of listeners, incorporating elements of hip-pop, soul, R&B, trip hop, and even a little dirty pop, all perfectly meshed together for what the Manning’s call, “art of the mistake.”
Since the release of A Million Trillion Statrs, Boomkat has appeared at SXSW, The Sunset Strip Music Festival, performed for DirecTV’s SXSW Live Concert Series and was featured on Chelsea Lately, E!’s “Daily 10” and GoTV.
From the beginning of their career, Boomkat experienced immediate success. Both singles from their first record, Boomlatalog. One, "The Wreckoning" and "What You Do To Me", hit #1 on the Hot Dance Club Play Charts in Billboard Magazine in 2003. The soulful single "Wastin' My Time" from the same record was personally licensed by Eminem and featured on the 8 Mile Soundtrack which sold over 6 million records worldwide.
Boomkat’s remake of the Blondie song "Rip Her to Shreds" can be heard in the opening credits of the film Mean Girls and “The Wreckoning” was used in the opening scene of The Italian Job.
Manning is also in the studio working with producer Linney on material for her upcoming solo album.
Taryn Manning was born in Falls Church, Virginia but raised in Tucson, Arizona until age twelve. Manning’s enormous energy and competitive nature brought her recognition and awards in everything from Karate to roller-skating. While living in Cardiff, California and attending various dance classes she realized her passion to perform. This led her to attend the prestigious Orange County High School of the Arts where her vocal, dance, and acting talents were groomed and developed, making Manning the quintessential triple threat she is today.
